The aeronautical maintenance

The aeronautical maintenance.

Aviation is a complex and dynamic activity that involves the participation of several members such as civil aviation companies and those that provide maintenance services. When failures happen, even with all efforts directed to prevent them from occurring, companies have the obligation to investigate the problem and take the necessary measures to solve it.

Thus, in order to minimize failures and problems, the aviation industry has developed and practiced safety culture which is a set of norms, rules, values and attitudes that significantly contribute to the efficient performance of the air transport.

To make the safetyculture happens , it is necessary to recognize that the air transport safety is everyone’s responsibility where it involves the management and responsibilities for the most operational activities. In addition, it is necessary to recognize that this culture is fundamental for the quality of the air operations and for valuing good behavior and safety practices which reduces the occurrence of aeronautical accidents and incidents.

Why is the air transport considered the safest in the world?

Aircrafts operate based on the excellence levels where everything is figured to minimize the possibility of an accident. In a commercial aviation, machines work with duplicated and even tripled systems that means  two engines, two or three pilots, two navigation systems, etc. In other words, the chances of an aircraft be involved an accident and falls is minimal also because the legislation is very strict at the point everything is exhaustively regulated in Brazil and worldwide.

In addition, aviation always learns from accidents that are investigated by experts so that all necessary measures must be taken in order to avoid them to happen again. Aviation companies invest a lot in safety to prevent accidents and ensure the quality of operations to not putting people’s lives at risk. Everything is related to the aircraft safety.

ANAC and certification

The National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) is the agency responsible for overseeing aeronautical operations in Brazil. It regulates aircraft maintenance and even certifies companies that work in this activity. It is responsible for promoting excellence and safety in civil aviation.

To receive ANAC certification, maintenance companies must comply with the requirements of Brazilian Civil Aviation Regulation n. 145 (RBAC 145) and follow the guidelines of the Supplementary Instruction – IS 145-001, which describes the appropriate method to apply for a certification process that must be followed by the Brazilian aeronautical maintenance companies.

The types of maintenance

In order to keep a safety culture , it is essential that every aircraft in operation, whether commercial or private, be frequently under maintenance, which is strictly and carefully carried out . There are some types of maintenance and some are done by routine and others by in-depth analysis.

Maintenance must be carried out efficiently,  properly and based on the manufacturers’ maintenance manual, to correct wastage, prevent failures and deterioration of parts. Those maintenance if done correctly increase the lifetime  of the components and consequently of the aircraft. All maintenance must be carried out by specialized professionals who seek to check the aircraft components, to verify if they are working properly and to identify and solve possible failures.

There are three main types of maintenance: preventive, corrective and predictive. In preventive maintenance, the professional performs with a certain frequency before the failure, replacing the components. In a corrective maintenance, the professional identifies and diagnoses the problem and then performs repair actions. In predictive maintenance, the professional monitors the aircraft’s items, subsystems and if a failure trend is identified he performs its maintenance.

Maintenance on rescue equipment

Maintenance also includes individual and collective rescue components, such as lifeboats and life jackets. These emergency equipment are designed to allow the evacuation of aircraft occupants in the event of a water landing.

Such devices must be kept in perfect working order and in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. That equipment must undergo periodic maintenance, which must be done by a specialized professional in order to check the integrity of the inflation and ejection system, gas cylinders, survival kit, the condition of the vests, the valves activation, etc.

In addition, it is necessary to highlight the Emergency Floating Systems (EFS), which are devices designed to helicopters, which aim to keep the aircraft stable and floating until the evacuation of passengers and crew. Such systems must also undergo frequent maintenance, to check the general condition and integrity of the structure. Those equipment also deserve attention and must undergo maintenance as well as other aircraft components.

Thus, planes and helicopters must undergo periodic maintenance, which ensures the proper functioning and safety of the flight, crew and passengers. In aviation, everything is done based on the safety of operations, which minimizes the occurrence of accidents and incidents, operating costs and possible failures making it increasingly safer and more efficient.

In this context, it can be said that the safety culture promotes the maintenance of good practices, the reduction of operating costs and the involvement of everyone, which makes participants in this sector aware of the importance of aviation, which requires quality, efficiency and above all safety.

Aircraft maintenance is one of the most important and vital activity for the air transport companies. It must never be forgotten or underestimated. Commercial and private aviation have the obligation to carry out maintenance on their aircrafts. For all those proceeds happen the aircraft companies must look for qualified and certified organizations by ANAC, such as SECALEAP for example.

Here at Secaleap, we are very concerned about the safety of your operations, new technologies and specialized workforce. We are specialized in serving all types of aircraft and offshore flights which requires a high level of expertise and specific salvage systems, such as boats and floats. All of this is to continue making the air transport the safest way in the world!
